defund obamacare

UPDATE: I will periodically post the latest emails from the effort to defund Obamacare – or, Don’t Fund It – as I receive them. Speaker Boehner has made good on his promise that the House would vote on a continuing resolution that will defund Obamacare (Note: Senate Republican leadership derailed members of their own party).

(VIEW 2014 SENATE MAP PREDICTIONS)

The latest email is below, then follows an up-to-date list of Senators who have or have not pledged to join the effort to defund Obamacare and oppose cloture. Some, have declined to respond to requests to take a stand, altogether. Finally, at the end you will find a list of Senate candidates with either a “Y” or a “N” next to their names. Some of the names of those who have refused to take the pledge to defund Obamacare, as well as those who pledged but now support cloture, may just surprise you.

Fellow Conservatives: This is an urgent action alert for every American who opposes Obamacare.
The U.S. Senate will vote to fund Obamacare this week and we need your help to stop it. Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has a procedural plan to fund Obamacare with only 50 votes, but first he needs at least 6 Republicans to vote for “cloture” to approve the process.According to numerous sources, some Republicans support Harry Reid’s scheme and plan to vote for cloture so the Democrats can fund Obamacare. These Republicans-In-Name-Only (RINOs) believe they can support Harry Reid’s rigged process without being held responsible for the outcome everyone knows it will produce — namely the funding of Obamacare. We must act now to let Senate Republicans know we won’t be fooled.A vote for cloture is a vote to fund Obamacare, and any Republican who lets the Democrats fund Obamacare should be defeated in their next election.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Please call these Republicans and urge them to OPPOSE “cloture” to stop Harry Reid’s plan to fund Obamacare. Don’t let them tell you a vote for cloture is a vote against Obamacare. It is not. If cloture were truly a vote against Obamacare, the Democrats wouldn’t be supporting it.Cloture will allow the Democrats to fund Obamacare and it MUST be defeated. If 41 Republicans oppose cloture, it WILL be defeated.Click Here to See Our Updated Whip List and Talking Points

P.S. First, John Boehner (R-OH) and the House Republicans tried to fool the grassroots with their “trick rule” to fund Obamacare. Now, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the Senate Republicans are trying their hand at the deception game by supporting “cloture” on Harry Reid’s plan to fund Obamacare. Don’t be fooled. Stop them. Melt the phones!

Senate Republican Whip List

Harry Reid plans to use a procedural trick to fund Obamacare with only 50 votes, but first he needs 6 Republican votes on “cloture” to approve the process.

Tell the Republicans to OPPOSE cloture to stop Harry Reid’s plan to fund Obamacare. Tell them a vote for cloture is a vote to fund Obamacare.

NOTE: Some Republicans may say the vote on cloture is a vote to “defund” Obamacare. It is not. Cloture is a vote on the debate process. The current process allows Democrats to fund Obamacare with only 50 votes, and it should be rejected.

A new Rasmussen poll for the week ending September 22 shows Democrats have their biggest lead on the Generic Congressional Ballot since mid-April. If mid-term elections were held today, 40% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Democrat in their district’s congressional race, while 37% would choose the Republican instead.

The two parties were tied for the previous two weeks. This is the first time since early August that either party has hit the 40% mark and is also the largest gap between the two parties since the GOP posted a three-point lead at that time. For most of the summer, both sides have earned less than 40% support.

A new Rasmussen poll for the week

A recent Gallup poll shows that a record level of Americans believe that the government is too powerful. In total, 6 in 10 Americans say that is the case, while just 7% say the government has “too little” power. At least half of Americans since 2005 have said the government has too much power, with the latest number reflecting a 1-point increase since the previous high measured last year.

The 7% of Americans who feel the government has “too little” power has been relatively steady since Gallup started tracking the measure regularly in 2002. Nearly one-third – 32% – say that government’s power is “about the right amount,” which unlike the steady 7%, represents a drop of 8% measured toward the end of 2012. Predictably, there is a clear partisan divide.

Republicans, by 81%, are now more likely than at any time since 2002 to say the government has too much power. Even Democrats, who now are more likely to say this than at any time since President Barack Obama took office in 2009, with 38% agreeing with Republicans.

Republicans, Democrats, and independents have all become more likely to say government is too powerful this year. Republicans’ and Democrats’ views, however, have become more polarized since Obama took office. In 2002, the two parties were roughly equal in their likelihood to view the federal government as too powerful, at 36% and 35%, respectively. Independents were most likely to say so, with 45%.

In the second term of George W. Bush, both Republicans and Democrats began to report higher levels of unease with the amount of power the federal government held. From 2004 and 2007, the difference between the parties ranged from 7% to 17%, with Democrats more likely than Republicans to say the government had too much power.

During the 2008 presidential race, about half of Republicans and Democrats held this view. By September 2009, however, views became much more polarized: 25% of Democrats were concerned with the government’s power, compared with 78% of Republicans. Since that low point, Democrats have become more likely to view the government as too powerful, with 38% this year saying so — for a gap of 43 points between the parties.

A recent Gallup poll shows that a

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, speaks to the media following a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden at the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011. Congressional leaders, leaving no extra time before a default threatened for tomorrow, are racing to push through a compromise sealed with President Barack Obama last night to raise the U.S. debt limit by at least $2.1 trillion and slash government spending by $2.4 trillion or more. Photographer: Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg *** Local Caption *** Harry Reid

As Congress heads into a major fiscal showdown over defunding obamacare, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid D-NV, is the least liked leading member. The budget battle could result in a government shutdown and the U.S. defaulting on its debt, which Americans are opposed to raising the ceiling on by a 2 -1 margin – so it is no wonder that few Americans approve of the job that top congressional leaders are doing.

Americans give low job approval ratings to Republican House Speaker John Boehner (37%), Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (33%), Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (39%), and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (35%). We reported that Speaker Boehner was in trouble with Ohio voters for being seen as not willing to fight enough on principle. In fact, Republicans are more likely to disapprove of their leadership than Democrats, with Nancy Pelosi enjoying relatively wide support among Democrats.

Ironically, all have a higher approval rating than the U.S. Congress, the institution they currently lead. Republicans’ low approval ratings of Boehner and McConnell, the party’s congressional leaders, no doubt reflect the observation that they do not listen to the grassroots. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, however, do not have such as problem. Maybe they should think about it as they decided whether or not the American people would like to hold an up or down vote on funding the “train wreck” that is Obamacare.

kenya hostages

The military says that “most” of the Kenya hostages who have been held at an upscale shopping mall in Kenya’s capital after it was attacked by members of an Al Qaeda-linked Somali militant group on Saturday have been freed.

Kenya’s armed forces launched what was referred to as a “major” assault on the militants on Sunday night, which was about 30 hours after the Islamists stormed the Nairobi mall in an attack that left at least 68 dead and 175 injured. At around midnight local time, Kenya’s Defence Forces said it had rescued most hostages and had taken control of most of the mall, but declined to give numbers. Officials said four Kenyan military personnel were wounded in the operation.

“This will end tonight,” Kenya’s Disaster Operation Center earlier said.

Somalia’s Al Qaeda-linked rebel group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the Saturday attack in which they used grenades and assault rifles and specifically targeted non-Muslims. The rebels said the attack was retribution for Kenyan forces’ 2011 push into Somalia and threatened more attacks.

The announcement of the Kenya military assault came after Associated Press reporters said they heard a large explosion at the mall, followed by silence.

The Kenyan military had remained in a tense standoff with Islamic extremists throughout Sunday, as exchanges of gunfire between both sides were heard inside the mall, Reuters reports.

Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, said in a national address Sunday that security forces had managed to isolate the “criminals” in one place inside the building, according to Reuters. Two helicopters were seen flying over the mall.

Many of the rescued hostages — mostly adults — were suffering from dehydration, Col. Cyrus Oguna, a military spokesman, told The Associated Press

There are between 50 to 200 hostages and most of them were hiding in various places inside the mall, Fox News confirms. They are not being held by the hostage-takers. There are between 10 to 15 militants currently inside the mall, with at least one being female.

Some of the people in hiding managed to escape before the military assault, according to Kenyan media reports.

Cecile Ndwiga said she had been hiding under a car in the basement parking garage.

“I called my husband to ask the soldiers to come and rescue me. Because I couldn’t just walk out anyhow. The shootout was all over here — left, right– just gun shots,” she said.

Police said that 49 people had been reported missing, according to a statement released by Kenya’s Red Cross.

Kenyatta said in his address that the attackers “shall not get away with their despicable and beastly acts.”

“We will punish the masterminds swiftly and indeed very painfully,” he added.

The White House said Sunday that President Barack Obama called Kenyatta to tell him the United States supports his country’s effort to bring al-Shabab to justice.

As of Sunday evening local time, Kenya’s Red Cross said 68 people were killed in the violence.

Kenyans and foreigners were among those confirmed dead, including French, Canadians and Chinese. The U.S. State Department said four American citizens were injured and were being given assistance. The age of the victims ranged from 2 to 78, Reuters reports.

Nineteen people, including at least four children, died after being admitted to Nairobi’s MP Shah hospital, said Manoj Shah, the hospital’s chairman. “We have at least two critical patients currently, one with bullets lodged near the spine,” he said.

A statement by Secretary of State John Kerry noted a victim killed in the assault.

“Although we have no reports of any Americans killed today, we have lost a member of our own State Department family: the wife of a foreign service national working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. The men and women of USAID work courageously around the world to help people striving for a better life.  While we mourn with her family today, we also pledge our commitment to do whatever we can to assist in bringing the perpetrators of this abhorrent violence to justice, and to continue our efforts to improve the lives of people across the globe,” the statement said.

Kenya’s presidential office said that one of the attackers was arrested on Saturday and died after suffering from bullet wounds.
