The affirmative action case brought by Abigail Fisher regarding college admissions survived a Supreme Court review Monday in a consensus decision that side stepped the difficult constitutional issues surrounding a challenge to the University of Texas admission plan.

Typically, we are all led to believe that the abortion issue is a loser for Republicans, thus the passage of the “District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” in the House on June 18 would normally bode badly for the GOP.

However, when we wade through the constructed reality we find that just the opposite is true. Democrats locked in “toss-up” or otherwise competitive races in conservative districts who felt compelled to fall in line with Nancy Pelosi will soon find themselves under assault from pro-life independent expenditure groups.

U.S. stock-index futures are extending a steep selloff that started in Asia on the back of worries about credit conditions in China and lingering concerns about the Fed’s plans to slow its bond buying. Dow futures are down 136 points, or 0.92%, while S&P 500 futures are off 1% in choppy trading. Treasury bonds are taking heavy losses as well, with the yield on the 10-year jumping 0.06 percentage point to 2.606%.
